Now in an archival-quality (removable) Brodart Cover. NOT Ex-library. NO remainder marks. This book was first published in New York in 1948; it was written in English because Prezzolini wanted to explain to the Americans, after the catastrophe of the Second World War, how and why Italy was what it was. For twenty years Mussolini had built the myth of a direct descent of the Italian people ("saints, poets, navigators") from the ancient Romans; the First World War, according to the vulgate, had been won by Italy for all the Allies; our "moral and civil" primacy was not called into question; the Risorgimento had been carried out by a whole people eager for redemption. Punctually and ironically, with his icastic spirit, Prezzolini dismantles these cliches.
