Portland, OR: Hung Far Low, 112 N.W. Fourth Ave. at Couch, [ca. 1945]. 4to. 7.5 x 10 in. [4 pp (unpaginated)]. Text printed in red & black, self-printed metallic patterned softcovers, w/ Chinese temple scene & junk on front cover, red lettering (minor rubbing, edgewear, slight bumping to corners), still VG copy, w/ Sweet & Sour BBQ Pork neatly crossed out in pen. First edition of this relatively uncommon original menu for the historic Hung Far Low restaurant (Red Flower Restaurant in Cantonese) in Portland’s Chinatown, and the oldest. The menu items featured an extensive relatively inexpensive menu from Shrimp Fried Rice at 85 ¢ to Chinese Style Fried Chicken at $ 1.60, or Boneless Duck with pineapple or mushroom sauce at $ 1.75. The Hung Far Low was first established in the building owned by the Wong family in Portland’s Chinatown, and the iconic sign graced the exterior until the early 2000’s when it was removed, and then restored to it’s original place. This menu features the Temple Lounge menu which was popular at the time, and served everything from the Singapore Sling to Cuba Libra Rum, and frozen Daiquari’s.
