About This Item
Stuttgart: Verlag von Carl Krabbe, n.y.. Hardcover. Small 4to. Light grey cloth with gilt and black lettering and pictorial stamping. 420pp. Numerous small and full-page (some in green, blue, brown or other colors) illustrations, decorative endpapers. Near fine. Faintest of rubbing at spine head/tail. Astonishingly bright, tight and fresh "Erste Reihe" (First Series) of this Dickenesque writer's humorous writings and tales, entirely in German. Undated, but clearly of late 19th century vintage. Seven long tales, (translation) "With Illustrations by H. Schlittgen, A. Langhammer, R. Haug, H. Albrecht, F. Bergen, E. Klein." Friedrich Wilhelm Häcklander (1816-77) was one of the most voluminous and popular of mid-19th century German authors. Interesting tiny bookseller's ticket at upper left of front board of "Koelling & Klappenbach Booksellers, Chicago" who catered to the Windy City's then-sizeable German population. Truly a superlative copy, with gilt as bright as when first applied.
