The dust jacket Is complete, worn to the extremities, spine faded/sunned; unclipped £4.90. There are pencil marks and notes in the margin, I assume from the time Lodge was reviewing the book. ; From the library of David Lodge. David Lodge is an English author and critic. A literature professor at the University of Birmingham until 1987, some of his novels satirise academic life, another theme is Roman Catholicism. Two of his novels were shortlisted for the Booker Prize; he also served as the chairman on the Booker Prize jury in 1989. Lodge has also written television screenplays and three stage plays. After retiring, he continued to publish literary criticism. Signed by Lodge on the endpapers. ; 487 pages .
Synopsis
Humboldt's Gift is a novel by Saul Bellow that tells of the balance of art and power in an ever-increasingly materialistic America. The tale is shown through a semi-autobiographical account of Bellow's friendship with a poet, Delmore Schwartz. Humboldt's Gift won the 1976 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and contributed to Bellow's winning the Nobel Prize in Literature the same year.
