Marbled endsheets and pastedowns. Bookplates on the front free endsheets and pastedowns. Hinges have been professionally repaired. Very good. Butler's long form satirical poem on puritanical culture. Large annotations and a Preface by Zachary Grey.

Edinburgh: Printed by Bell and Murray, 1779. [Satirical Poetry] FINELY BOUND, a later edition. Complete in two volumes. Duodecimo in half-sheets (18 x 11cm), pp.xxxii; 408; pp.419 [1]. With a preface and very extensive footnotes. Also with a folding copper engraved frontispiece to volume I. Original marbled boards showing vellum to corners, with slightly later marbled calf backs, possibly contemporary with ink ownership, titled in gilt to red morocco labels. Trimmed edges speckled navy. Black ink ownership of William White to fly-leaf of both volumes, dated 1836. Internally clean, with some spotting throughout. Upper joints just starting, but still firm. Moderate general wear to bindings, with some loss to head-caps. Very good. A long satirical poem originally published in three parts between 1663 and 1678. Set during the last years of Parliamentary rule before the Restoration of 1660, it presents a cast of characters and a premise strikingly similar to 'Don Quixote' (1605-1615).
