The first edition, first impression, in the publisher's original price unclipped dust wrapper.The third novel in Joyce Cary's 'First Trilogy', following on from 'Herself Surprised' and 'To Be A Pilgrim'. It follows the adventures of an artist who exploits his friends and acquaintances to earn money, scorning conventional behaviour.The novel saw a 1958 film adaptation starring Alec Guinness, who also wrote the screenplay.With the illustrated bookplate of Cuthbert Foster of Hadley Bourne to the front pastedown. In the publisher's original cloth binding, with price unclipped dust wrapper. A touch of fading to spine head, otherwise externally excellent. Rear hinge strained, but firmly held. Bookplate to front pastedown. Discolouration to dust wrapper back strip, with rear wrap age toned. Chipping to back strip head and tail, with closed tear to head of rear wrap over joint. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright. Very Good
