Chicago Illinois: Western Historical Publishing Co., 1883. Early days in Keweenaw County, MI, are recalled in this new 36-page booklet titled: Keweenaw County, Michigan, USA The spiral-bound booklet includes excerpts from two hard to find sources: the 1883 History of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and Michigan, a Guide to the Wolverine State, a 1941 product of the WPA Writer's Program. The tri-color cover is printed on 80# card stock and protected with a vinyl sheet. The text is printed on 8.5" x 11" 60# opaque paper. The booklet also includes a history of Isle Royale County, which was separated from Keweenaw in 1875. Isle Royale is made up of several islands in Lake Superior. Among the subjects included are: Overview of location, county officials, etc; Courts; Extensive information on Mines and Miners --primarily copper; Churches; Mining Villages of Copper Harbor, Eagle Harbor; Eagle River, Delaware, Copper Falls, Central, Phoenix, Allouez, Agate Harbor; and other interesting bits of history and trivia. In addition to the many names mentioned throughout the booklet, there are a number of biographies. These often shed light on area businesses, churches, professions and institutions, and on the events of the day. The names, include: Charles Corgan, Leon Lauvaux, William Tresise, George H. Bottomley, Stephen Cocking, Joseph Dahm, John Foley, Franklin Hopkins, Charles Kuntz, Capt. Thomas O'Connor, William P. Raley, James Rasewarn, Michael Smith, Jacob Swartz, Capt. Richards. This booklet includes 11 pages of excerpts from the WPA book, including a separate section on Isle Royale. Although perhaps out of date as a tour book, these WPA guides are rich in history and trivia. Old Fort Wilkins, Bears in Keweenaw Park, the Devil's Washtub, Justus Rathbone, author of the rituals for the Order of Knights of Pythias, are some of the subjects mentioned..
