About This Item

Hong Kong: Urban Council, Hong Kong, 1997. Catalogue of an exhibition of some 34 rare old maps of China, drawn from the National Library and a private Hong Kong collection. Maps range in age from a rubbing of an 11th century Song Dynasty map engraved on stone, to maps from the colonial period of Hong Kong, in the early 20th century. Many of the earlier maps, rather than emphasizing cartographic precision, are more artisic expressions of the landscape depicted. Rivers, mountains and palaces are painted in three dimensions on multiple scrolls, and even in one instance, on a fan, employing vivid polychrome colours. Essays and detailed descriptions in bilingual Chinese and English. 94 pp., large format photos of 34 rare maps, many in brilliant colour.. First Edition. Soft Cover. New. 38 x 26 cm..
