EDINBURGH: Sylvester Doig at the Royal Exchange A rare english translation of this work first published in France in 1778. There is no date on the title page but there is an inscription dated 1793. With 2 title pages, an advertisement, contents listing and instructions to the binder, and text with 24 copper engraved plates. There is a section on each bird and a plate usually illustrating male and female forms bound with it. Bound in full leather with a gilt crest on the front board. The binding requires repair with wear at joints, corners and edges - the front board is becoming detached. There is a small signature on the front paste-down endpaper which is not very clear - but may be a Mr Hay. Whoever this was, he has added notes in ink to the preliminaries and sometimes to the backs of plates. These contain detailed descriptions of the favourite foods of many of the birds - for example skylarks (a penchant for spiders - 'good for them particularly if they are not well'). The two title pages are detached but the remainder of the book is sound and complete. There is a little browning and spotting - but apart from the ink annotations - the book is very clean. A rare and interesting work.

ABOUT THIS BOOK: From the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Gulf, a sweeping cultural and natural history of the bald eagle in America. The bald eagle is regal but fearless, a bird you're not inclined to argue with. For centuries, Americans have celebrated it as "majestic" and "noble," yet savaged the living bird behind their national symbol as a malicious predator of livestock and, falsely, a snatcher of babies. Taking us from before the nation's founding through inconceivable resurgences of this enduring all-American species, Jack E. Davis contrasts the… Read More

ILLUSTRATED COMPREHENSIVE STUDY OF ADAPTATIONS OF BIRDS FOR BREEDING BY EXPERT ON DARWIN'S FINCHES. 10 inches tall mauve cloth binding, gilt title to spine, unmarked, very good in good price-clipped dust jacket with edge tears. From dust jacket: "The primary aim of this book is an interpretation of the main adaptations of birds for breeding-whether a species lests solitarily or in colonies, whether it is monogamous or has several mates, the lumber of eggs that it lays, the relative size of its eggs, the rate of development of its eggs and young, and the age at which it first breeds. This book is the first comprehensive survey of these points that has been made, so readers can see what is known, and what emains to be discovered, and hence may be stimulated to add to knowledge. Description:
Rising from sandbars on the Platte River with clarion calls, the sandhill crane (Grus canadensis) feels the urgency of spring migration. Elegant, noble, and spiritual, the sandhill crane is one of the most ancient of all birds. More than a half-million strong, flying in squadrons, these majestic creatures point northward to their Arctic and sub-Arctic breeding ranges. Theirs is an epic story of endurance through the ages. With 153 stunning color photographs, On Ancient Wings presents sandhill cranes in their wild but increasingly compromised habitats today. Over the course of five years, Michael Forsberg documented the tall gray birds in habitats ranging from the Alaskan tundra, to the arid High Plains, from Cuban nature preserves to suburban backyards. With an eye for beauty and an uncommon persistence, the author documents the cranes' challenges to adapt and survive in a rapidly changing natural world. Forsberg argues that humankind, for its own sake, should secure the cranes' place in the future.… Read More
