About This Item

Leipzig: Bernhard Tauchnitz, 1849-1855. Leather. Very Good. 6.5" by 4.5". Not Stated. The first Tauchnitz copyright edition of Macaulay's famous work The History of England, in eight volumes bound in four. The first Tauchnitz copyright edition of this eight-volume work in a half calf binding. Eight volumes bound in four, of a ten volume set. The last volume containing volumes nine and ten were published posthumously by his sister Lady Trevelyan. A History of England was first published in 1848. It begins in 1685 and covers the history of England until 1702, encompassing the reign of James II, the Glorious Revolution, the coregency of William and Mary, and concludes at William III's death. Macaulay's approach to this work was considered innovative. He utilised the dramatic style of classic historians whilst incorporating the factual approach of his eighteenth century precursors, such as Hume. In a half calf binding. Externally very smart, with very minor rubbing to the extremities. A couple of small faint marks to the boards. Label to the front free end paper of the fourth volume. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are spotted throughout. Very Good
