About This Item

London: John Murray, 1853. First edition. Cloth. Good. 9" by 6". Not Stated. The first edition of this fascinating account of the exile of Napoleon Bonaparte at St. Helena, complete with a large folding map of the island. A comprehensive and detailed account of the exile of Napoleon Bonaparte, one of the most prolific military and political leaders in French history, on the island of St. Helena. Compiled from the letters, journals, and official documents of Sir Hudson Lowe, an Anglo-Irish soldier that was serving as the Governor of St. Helena during Napoleon's exile. Complete in three volumes. The first edition of this work. Written and edited by William Forsyth. Containing an engraved frontispiece to each volume, and a large folding map of the island of St. Helena to the rear of Volume I. Collated and complete.  In the publisher's original embossed cloth binding. Externally, some general shelf wear to the boards and fading to the front board of Volume II. Spines are faded, and there is bumping to the head and tail of the spines and extremities. Internally, hinges strained to Volumes I and II. Frontispiece to Volume I is detached but present. Light spotting and handling marks to the first and last few pages of each volume, and the odd spot throughout, otherwise pages are generally bright and clean. Good
