Ray [ILLUSTRATOR AND THE BOOK IN ENGLAND, ETC.] "Bewick's use of end-grained blocks was widely imitated both in England and the Continent. Among his apprentices were some of the most distinguished engravers of the first half of the 19th century. When later artists like Gordon Craig and William Nicholson revived the tradition of creative work on wood, they turned to Bewick's example in freeing themselves from the trammels of reproductive engraving."
