About This Item

Amsterdam: E. van Harrevelt, 1766. 1st Edition . Very Good. 5.25 x 7.75 inches (13 x 20 cm). Complete two volume set. First French language edition. Quarter calf leather bindings with marbled boards. Spines with five raised bands and red morocco title labels. Wear and slight loss to ends of spine. Slight cracking to joints but both volumes remain securely bound. Wear to corners of boards. Light foxing to endpapers and blanks. Very clean text throughout. Numerous illustrations within the text. Two inked inscriptions to front pastedown endpaper in both volumes, one crossed out. Originally published in Dresden in 1764 as Geschichte der Kunst des Alterthums. A third volume of notes and additional thoughts was later issued in 1767. This French edition was highly important as German was rarely read by intellectuals and artists of the period. The first part was only translated into English in 1849 (as 'The History of Ancient Art Among the Greeks'). The full work only appeared in English in 1880 (as 'The History of Ancient Art'). A landmark work on the history of art. Overall condition is Very Good. Size: 5.25 x 7.75 inches (13 x 20 cm). Hardback. Printed pages: 8vo. lvi, 360; xxviii, 343
