Green decorative cloth with design of chemical beaker flanked by flowering plants on front boards in dark green white, and gilt, stamped with designer's "M". x, 383 + [5] pp. Of publishers ads. An early mystery featuring a female detective, Hilda Wade, a nurse who comes to St. Nathaniels Hospital to work with medical sleuth/physiologist Professor Sebastian. The book is narrated by Dr. Cumberledge, Sebastians assistant, who follows her to Rhodesia and Tibet as Hilda uncovers dark secrets about the Professors past. The novel was first serialized in the Strand Magazine and was published after the authors death. The publishers note states that the last chapter of the novel was finished by Allens friend and neighbor, Arthur Conan Doyle. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .
