About This Item
New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1956. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. This is a stated first edition. The interior of the book is crsip and clean, with no marks or wear. The beige and red cloth covers are fresh, with just a bit of wear/rubs to the bottom edge. The dust jacket is also in very good condition, with light wear overall, but heavier wear and shallow chipping to the spine area. The attached scan should give a better idea of condition. The jacket is now in a protective mylar cover. The dust jacket description calls this "a medieval epic on a heroic scale." It tells of the wars, feuds, intrigues, scandals and love affairs of the decadent Imperial Court in Kyoto in the twelfth century. It was a time of corruption, of the disintegration of the effete aristocracy, of brawling samurai. Those who have seen the film Gate of Hell will recognize the scenes and some of the characters.
