"Since the early nineteenth century, 80 percent of the Yorubas have been converted to Christianity and Islam in approximately equal numbers. According to dominant theories and practical experience, the cultural changes brought about by this extensive conversion should have resulted in religiously-based political action or conflict. Yet Laitin shows that sharp religious differences within Yoruba society have not caused political division and are unlikely to do so in the future. From a theoretical point of view, he sees an "unnatural" religious toleration in the Yoruba political arena."
