Gold full-cloth boards, green, mauve, and black stamped cover design and spine titles, moderate shelf wear, rub, discoloration. Elaborate cover design depicts fairy-like figure with butterfly wings, oak tree in background with two root structures flaring to either side of fairy and depicting owl and elf faces at centers; above, an open scroll with cover title. Castle in the clouds w/red sun at back board. Heavy stock pages good; few w/moderate discoloration. Frontispiece plate w/fine tissue guard. Bind good; front hinge reinforced. Solid, near very good example of this rare illustrated volume. Translated from the Danish by Carl Siewers. Illustrated with over Eighty Vignettes, and Twenty-four Full-page Half-tone plates by Joseph J. Mora. These richly detailed illustrations, accompanying the tales throughout, are intriguing, enigmatic and sometimes unusual. Joseph Jacinto Mora (1876-1947) was a Uruguayan-born American illustrator, sculptor, painter, photographer, muralist and author. Living with the Hopi and writing about his experiences, he became known as the "Renaissance Man of the West."
