Mount Athos Monasteries, founded in the year 963, is one of the oldest in the world; it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Comprised of over 20 monasteries about two thousand monks live there today. Visitors are limited to men only; females either human or animals are forbidden, with the exception of cats whose redeeming quality is their love of mice.
