About This Item

New York: Pantheon Books, 1973. First edition. Near fine in near fine dust jacket.. First printing of this charming story of a group of mice who work so hard on their Mardi Gras masks, they begin to frighten themselves. Leo Leonni's colorful, dynamic children's books are defined by his use of collage and stamping for his illustrations. Though he spent the bulk of his career as art director for advertisements and periodicals including FORTUNE, it was in picture books that he found "the key to unlocking decades of personal fears, joys, insecurities and loves" through simple metaphor (NEW YORK TIMES). Leonni's love for the medium translated into critical success, earning him four Caldecott Honors and the adoration of many young readers. 11'' x 8.5''. Original blue cloth boards. Original unclipped ($4.50) color pictorial dust jacket. Illustrated in color. [32] pages. Jacket with a touch of edgewear, a bit of foxing to reverse. Tiny spot of soil to last page. Tight.

Synopsis

LEO LIONNI wrote and illustrated more than 40 picture books, including four Caldecott Honor books—I nch by Inch, Swimmy, Frederick,  and  Alexander the Wind-Up Mouse.  He died in 1999 at the age of 89.
