About This Item
New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1924. First Edition. The Pulitzer Prize-winning author's first book, "a collection of linked short stories about a black farm laborer named Killdee; his wife, Rose; and their foster daughter, Missie. Peterkin drew on what she knew about the lives of real people at Lang Syne, rendering some of them so acutely that the portraits are recognizable to their descendants. Yet the emotional force of many of the tales comes from her own life experience, especially the trauma of losing her mother and growing up apart from her father" (Williams, Susan Millar. "Peterkin, Julia Mood." South Carolina Encyclopedia). A presentable copy of a significant debut. First Printing, one of 2,000 numbered copies (of which 1,950 were for sale), this being copy no.1,908. Octavo (21.5cm); beige and purple batik paper-covered boards and green cloth backstrip, with title label mounted to spine; green topstain; dustjacket; [ii],[8],9-188pp. Hint of a forward lean, light wear and minute exposure to lower corners, with tiny loss to paper at upper left corner of front cover; contents fresh; Near Fine. Dustjacket is unclipped (priced $2.50), lightly edgeworn and dust-soiled, with a few tiny nicks and tears to extremities, and two small splits to front flap fold; the green coloring on spine and front panel has mellowed, with a very faint impression of someone's handwriting on front panel; still a substantially complete, Very Good+ example.
