About This Item

Garden City, New York: Garden City Publishing Do., Inc., 1937. Reprint of 1930 Edition . Hard Back. Very Good/No Dust Jacket. 5 3/4" x 8 1/2. 1108 Pages with Index of Authors. From the Elizabeth James collection with Ex Libris label on front endpaper. Top page edges are light gray. Stories by Giovanni Boccaccio, David Bone, Joseph Conrad, Captain Dingle, Anatole France, Victor Hugo. Jonas Lie, Basil Lubbock, John Masefield, Herman Melville, Edgar Allan Poe, Felix Riesenberg, Morley Roberts, Ernest Shackleton, H.B. Wells An Many Others from Ancient Greece to Modern Japan. MIss Elizabeth Doyley is mainly responsible for the task of making the selection, from the vast amount of material available, which it is hoped is fairly representative of the prose literature of the sea; and the editor here makes complete acknowledgment of her good taste, wide reading, and industry, without which, for his part, there would have been no anthology. A word is necessary relative to the arrangement of the Contents. When the episode is taken from real life it is placed under the country to which the event belongs and not classified according to the nationality of the author. So with the chronological order: the description of an actual occurrence is put in its right place, that of making the selection, from the vast amount of material available, which it is hoped is fairly representative of the prose literature of the sea.
