Toronto: Stoddart. Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 1996. Hardcover. 0773729712 . A beautifully illustrated book with both historical photos and contemporary photos by Andre Gallant. Pierre Berton covers the Great Lakes region (that contains 1/5 of the world's fresh water) from its ice age origins thru the various stages of human occupation and their use of its resources. Berton is well-known for his prose and his ability to bring the past to life and reveal the threads of our present era. The front and rear end papers depict large two page maps of the region. This is a large format 4to size book thas is a clean, tight and unmarked with no interior or exterior markings with the exception of a previous owner's Christmas inscription on the verso of the blank front end paper. The dust jacket in similarly nice condition and with the exception of a small nick to the jacket on the rear panel near the spine, there are no chips, tears, or markings. ; Color & B&W Photos & Illustrations; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 224 pages .
