About This Item
An account of the Chicago fire as told by two Washington Tribune journalists who witnessed it, James Washington Sheahan and George Putnam Upton.
As described in the preface, "This volume is devoted to a connected account of the great Chicago conflagration, with an incidental narrative of the destruction caused by the terrible forest fires in Wisconsin and Michigan, and a necessarily brief statement of the great fires of the world, which may serve for purposes of comparison. It is the account of witnesses of, and actors in the terrible scenes that closed with the destruction of a great city."
This volume is in good condition. There is some bumping to the corners, wear especially to the top and bottom of the spine, and some minor staining to the fabric on both the front and back covers.
There is a hand written note on the front fly leaf reading "Please except [sic] with the compliments of a friend" and a previous owners name written in pencil on the title page.
The front and back hinges are both slightly cracked, and there is some slight foxing throughout, most of it is minor, and does not affect the text in any significant way.
There are many illustrations, and two fold-out maps which are both present and in excellent condition.
