New York: William Morrow and Company, 1989. Hardcover. Small 4to. Burgundy cloth spine with silver lettering and beige paper over boards, pictorial dust jacket. 351pp. Illustrations. Near fine/near fine. Handsome, tight first edition of this autobiography, sequel to his 1983 Pulitzer Prize-winning "Growing Up" about his childhood in Virginia. Choice autograph addition: Tipped to front flyleaf is a Typed Note Signed from Russell, 1p, 5½" X 8½", New York, NY, 5 May 1983. Addressed to Lincoln and Civil War scholar Arnold F. Gates (1914-93). Near fine. On "The New York Times" letterhead, Baker writes cordially to "Thank you for your warm congratulations on the Pulitzer" and comments on an April 1983 "New York Times Magazine" critical of the Pentagon that Gates had enjoyed: "And thank you, too, for letting me know you thought 'Brass Hat in Hand' was on target. I thought the same about your remarks on the subject." Boldly signed in full in black fineline.
