About This Item

Garden City, NY: Doubleday, 1961. First Edition, First Thus . Hardcover. Very Good/Poor. Todd Webb (Author-Photographer). Text/BRAND NEW & Bright. Black linen boards/VG; strong & sound w/light edge and surface rubs. DJ/Poor; intact w/nips, chips, rubs. closed tears & small losses to all leading edges. Maps to endpapers; tape residue to fEP. A photographic documentary of mining camps and ghost towns of California, Nevada, Colorado, Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana by award winning photographer Todd Webb (1905 - 2000) whose keen eye for everyday life and architecture is not often rivaled. This study of famous old diggings is presented in 4 sections: I, The Mother Lode - California; 2, The Comstock Lode; 3, Colorado - Pikes Peak or Bust; and, 4, Gold- and Silver-Mining Camps - Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana. Webb tells us sites were dictated often by "whimsy of time, luck (both good and bad), available money, weather, ... flatires, a cracked radiator, and other trivia." Strong copy in a no longer attractive dust jacket.
