Pages are mildly tanned with visible foxing, heavy in places. Mild cracking to hinges, however binding remains firm. Mdoerate thumb-marking present. Mild water staining to pages throughout. Previous owner's inscription to front pastedown and endpaper. Mild annotations and marginalia to pages throughout. Boards have notable edgewear with notable corner crushing and notable marking to boards. Moderate tanning to spine, which has visible peeling to ends and corners. Notable scuffing to edges. Mild cracking to front joint.

London: John Murray, 1863. First edition. Hardcover. pp. xii, 520, 32 (ads). 8vo. Embossed teal cloth with gilt lettering to spine, and gilt illustration to front board. Illustrated with figures, and woodcuts including a frontispiece and maps. Lyell was an influential geologist, incluencing Darwin et al though initially uncomfortable with the theory of natural selection on account of his religious beliefs; herein he responds to Darwin's theory, tentatively accepting it; Lyell was "responsible for the general acceptance of the view that all features of the Earth's surface are produced by physical, chemical, and biological processes through long periods of geological time." - Britannica.

Very Good with light wear to cloth at extremities, corners softened. Inner hinges and spine appear inexpertly glue-repaired. Previous owner name to front free endpaper, foxing to preliminary and terminal pages. A nice copy.
