James Murphy's 'General View of Portugal' is a late-18th-century collection of chapters describing the history of the kingdom of Portugal.
According to Smollett in his 'Critical Review', on Murphy's "General View of the State of Portugal",
"Mr. Murphy was not content with publishing the memoranda of his tour in Portugal, but was eager to undertake the task of comping, from the works of [Portuguese] natives, a more faithful and complete account of that Kingdom that the English had before seen in their language."
Murphy includes descriptions of the people and tribal groups, topographical and geographical information, mining and gold extraction, agricultural implications, government and legal proceedings, as well as Portuguese philosophy and astronomy.
