About This Item
New York: Goodwin & Co., [1889]. First edition. Album featuring color lithography by Julius Bien & Co. of trading card-style images of 23 unnamed women on 5 pages interspersed with 3 pages of women doing various things (without any card-style images). Intended to supplement trading cards found in packages of Old Judge and Gypsy Queen cigarettes. This series of cards features women, in some cases participating in games and sports, but mostly observing, gazing thoughtfully, or merely looking lovely. Includes images of women engaging in horseback riding, archery, bowling, swimming, sailing, "club swinging," coasting (i.e., sledding), ice skating, et al. 10 string-tied, oblong lithographic pages, including covers, printed on heavy card. There were 50 cards in the "1889 A38 (N165) Games and Sports" series according to the website of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. We are unable to locate any further information and so must presume this album is either missing pages or it was not issued with all of the images in the first place. A few scuffs and scrapes, narrow portion of bottom left front cover missing, light staining, general aging and wear; altogether good or better. Rare. Although not indicated as such in the book, from the collection of football writer Paul "Dr. Z" Zimmerman.
