List of plates. .Complete with all seventy full page hand-colored plates engraved by Georges-Jacques Gatine, each with a leaf of explanatory text opposite the plate.

Contemporary 1/2 red morocco over marbled boards. Spine with gilded decorations, title and publication year. Marbled endpapers. Some rubbing to boards, lower corners bumped. Light scattered foxing mainly to margins to some plates. A very nice complete suite, in very pure colors, preserved in its elegant decorated binding of the period.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 First edition of the main historical work dedicated to the famous women of historical and literary France, including queens, princesses, duchesses, mistresses, muses, fictional characters, salon hostesses, maids of honour and even witches. The illustration consists of 70 full page plates, very well engraved and admirably colored at the time with gold highlights.70 sheets of notices and historical commentaries by La Mésangère accompany each of the plates. These plates represent French women's costumes from the twelfth to the eighteenth centuries. This edition is considered to be the first printing," says Colas in his Bibliography devoted to costumes.
