About This Item
Synopsis
Sir Vidiadhar Surajprasad Naipaul, commonly known as V. S. Naipaul, is a Trinidadian writer of Indian descent known for his novels set in developing countries. Naipaul won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2001. He has been called "a master of modern English prose. This novel, In A Free State , was awarded the Man Booker prize in 1971. In A Free State is a collection of three stories: “One out of Many,” “Tell Me Who to Kill,” and the title piece, “In a Free State.” It is essentially about the experience of being out of place, and the stories are about people who find themselves in places that they don’t belong, or who are made to feel by others that they do not belong. This novel is a provocative, brilliantly written exploration of the often tumultuous relationships between different cultures.
