About This Item

Americana FCT Smithsonian Institution, Jesse Walter Fewkes, John Reed Swanton, William Edward Myer. Forty-second annual report of the Bureau of American Ethnology to the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, 1924-1925. Washington, D.C., United States Government Printing Office, 1928, vii, 900 pages, 10 unnumbered leaves of plates: illustrations (some color), maps, index. Good, tight copy of a large volumes, in original green cloth. Nice copy. $100.00 Box 5678 Contents: Report of the Chief of Bureau by J. Walter Fewkes; Social organization and social usages of the Indians of the Creek Confederacy by John R. Swanton; Religious beliefs and medical practices of the Creek Indians by John R. Swanton; Aboriginal culture of the Southeast by John R. Swanton; Indian trails of the Southeast by William Edward Myer. Interesting collection of studies on the tragic history of one of the Five Civilized Tribes. The term Five Civilized Tribes was applied by European Americans in the colonial and early federal period in the history of the United States to the five major Native American nations in the Southeast—the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek, and Seminoles. The descriptor "Five Civilized Tribes" was not a misnomer, but it didn't protect them from the murderous rapacity of cruel and crooked politicians. The Jacksonian removal of these defenseless nations is a great stain on the American people.
