About This Item
NY: Delacorte Press, 1988. First edition. Hardcover. Near fine/Fine. Inscribed in the year of publication on the half-title page: "8/88, To John--Any fan of Matthiessen's is a reader with good taste. Thanks for putting me on your list. David Quammen." Uncommon signed, and especially notable in light of the inscription giving praise to his friend and fellow writer Peter Matthiessen, who lends praise on the back of the jacket: "David Quammen's curiosity is infectious, and his thought provocative. Lewis Thomas and Stephen Gould will have to make room for him in the small company of distinguished essayists in the natural sciences." A collection of short evolution and ecology essays largely (but not exclusively) drawn from his Outside magazine column. A slight cock to spine otherwise fine in a fine jacket (with an awesome illustration by Hiro Kimura). With a clipping of the review of the book by Tim McNulty in The Seattle Times and a reading announcement sent by Elliot Bay Books laid in.

About Rural Hours
Rural Hours (formerly Wood + River = Books, est. 2019) specializes in ecology, natural history, nature writing, the environment, environmental literature, and contemporary essay, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions. We draw our name from the popular-but-then-forgotten book by Susan Fenimore Cooper (published in 1850), generally considered the first work of environmental creative nonfiction by a woman in the U.S. We are interested in challenging and expanding the canon of environmental literature and finding books that tell remarkable stories and illuminate the tradition of writing about place and natural history.
