About This Item

New York: Alfred a Knopf Inc., 1986. First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover with Dust Jacket. Fine/Fine.

No Flaws or Blemishes but minimal shelf handling; Still Gift Quality. First American Edition.  Number 8 in the Series. . The aging but heroic soldier, Harry Flashman, is caught in the middle of the Chinese Taiping Rebellion and is unwittingly called on to champion the fortunes of a concubine, a Minister, and a female bandit, all to his own personal gain.

This enjoyable romp incidentally provides a wealth of historic data of China in the early 1860s.

Background Information:
Flashman is based on the original character created by Thomas Hughes in Tom Brown's School Days, published in 1857. The Flashman character was a fictionalized look at the 19th century British Army, but Fraser was always praised for his historical accuracy in portraying real world events.

Synopsis

It is 1860, and while China seethes through the bloodiest civil war in history and the British and French armies hack their way to the heart of the Forbidden City, Flash Harry hoodwinks them all.
