Toronto: William Briggs, 1919. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Very Good+. Dark blue boards with gilt lettering on spine & face. A tribute to John McCrae & the famous war poem written in the Flanders fighting fields in 1915. The poem was composed after the death after the death of a close friend / soldier & was first published in Punch magazine in December, 1915. Includes frontispiece archival photo of the Guelph-born physician / poet (1872 - 1918) protected with tissue guard. Also included an autograph facsimile of the war poem, other earlier poetry by McCrae, a sketch by him & a B&W photo. (ix) 141 pages. The second part of the book is a lengthy tribute to the shortened life of McCrae by friend Sir Andrew MacPhail entitled John McCrae - An Essay in Character. MacPhail (1864 - 1938) was a Canadian physician, professor, soldier, prolific writer & intellectual. No dust jacket. Small 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Minor corner rubbing. Internals clean, tight & unmarked. INSCRIBED & dated 1919 by MacPhail.
