SOPER, Eileen. 1st Edition, 1st Impression. 12 x 19.5 cm blue boards with black titles to front and spine, pictorial endpapers printed in blue, white and black, colour frontispiece, 8 full page 2 colour illustrations (4 in red and black and 4 in blue and black) and numerous illustrations in black only throughout. The first impression dust jacket is unclipped and shows a price of 6/- net on the front flap, whilst the back flap has the extract from the Daily Sketch and lists the Happy, Merry and Jolly Story Books as called for. The boards have some mottling to the front fore edge, spine and rear as is sometimes found with this book and there is a little toning to the very tips of the spine which are a touch pushed. There is a small ding on the top edge of the upper boards and the corners are lightly rubbed with the top corners having a hint of creasing. Internally there is a gift inscription dated Christmas 1944 but otherwise the book is very clean with just a couple of small handling marks. The jacket is now protected in a removable cover (not shown in our images) has a little sunning to the spine and some light marking to the spine and rear. There is a 2.5 cm scuff line on the rear panel and rubbing to the corners, spine tips and edges. There is loss to the corners and spine tips of 3mm at the head and 1cm at the foot. There is also a chip of 1.8 x 2.6cm extending from the front joint at the head of the spine onto the front panel and a smaller one of less than 0.5 cm extending onto the back for 1.5 cm. There is also a chip of 2 x 1cm along the top edge of the rear panel and loss along the bottom edge of the front panel ranging from 2mm to 1 cm to the fore edge corner which has a 1.7 x 2.7 cm chip. There are also a few small edge tears of up to 1cm with associated creasing. The rarest of the Famous Five books and difficult to find in any condition.
