About This Item

San Francisco: City Lights Books,, 1971. First edition, first printing. This autobiography was published three years after Neal Cassady's death in 1968. In addition to The First Third, the volume includes fragments from Cassady's writings as well as his letters to Jack Kerouac and Ken Kesey. Neal Cassady (1926-1968) was introduced to the Beat poets in 1946. "Idolised for his fast driving, hyperactive energy and voracious reading habits, Neal was the perfect Beat character" (Cochrane), and he quickly became a significant source of inspiration for the group despite publishing nothing during his lifetime. In Cassady, Jack Kerouac saw "'the energy of a new kind of American saint' and thought him to be 'more like Dostoevsky than anyone I know'" (ANB). Kerouac describes his journeys with Cassady in On the Road, while Allen Ginsberg dedicated "Howl" to "N. C., the secret hero". Octavo. Original white wrappers, titles to spine and covers in black and white. A little light creasing and faint toning to wrappers, spine cocked and slightly stained, contents bright. A very good copy.
