[Mexican American War] [Mexico] Ruano. R.; P Velez; José María Lara. Esposición del Secretario del Despacho de Hacienda, Leida en Consejo de Ministros con Asistencia de los Gobernadores de los Estados, en 17 de Agosto de 1851. México: Impr. de J.M. Lara. 1851. Brown leather with gilt tooling. 24 cm. 14, 34 pp. [7 folding tables] [4] pp. Covers show some wear, a few spots and stains; overall very good.
OCLC shows five holdings (Harvard; Yale; Univ. Ill.; Biblio. Natl. Mexico; & Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin) Speech and documents relating to the meeting in this capital of the governors of the states, summoned to provide for the demands of the federal treasury in the aftermath of the Mexican-American War. Signed on p. 14: Piña y Cuevas. Second section has title: Documentos. "The invasion of the Republic in 1847 did not produce only the misfortune that is the dismemberment of its territory, but the loss of its income, and great embarrassments to repair it. Maritime customs suffered because of the large number of foreign goods that were introduced during the occupation of the ports, and because a long border approximates our populations, near which others from the neighboring nation have been established and continue to form, which serve as an asylum for smugglers, it is very difficult to find a means of avoiding the fraud of rights, since this, which was the main resource of the federation's treasury, is in astonishing decline. … Meanwhile, the national debt increased considerably, due to the absolute suspension of payments during the war, and due to the large sums that it cost to support it, obtained by exactions that prepared the treasury enormous liabilities, and by very onerous loans." An interesting and rare Mexican War item.- Bookseller Independent bookstores (US)

In 1927 Walden helped train sled dogs and drivers for Admiral Richard E. Byrds Antarctic expedition, and he led the dog-sled freighting of the supplies from the ships to Byrd's base camp "Little America". Walden later became the original breeder of the Chinook sled dog. In 1930 Walden, considered to be one of the most respected and heralded pioneers of the Klondike and Alaskan gold rushes, was presented a photographic album by Admiral Byrd that contained over 500 images of the Antarctic expedition of 1928-30. Dana Coman (Dr Francis Dana Coman (1895-1952) ) was with Byrds first and second expeditions to Antarctica and was a personal doctor of Admiral Byrd.
