Edition originale enrichie d'un amical ENVOI autographe signé de Fernand Léger à l'architecte Paul Nelson et à son épouse Francine (née Francine Lecoeur). D'origine américaine, Paul Nelson (1895-1979), élève d'Auguste Perret, fut, de longue date, un ami proche de Fernand Léger. Plusieurs projets lièrent les deux hommes, notamment l'hôpital mémorial France-Etats-Unis de Saint-Lô (1946-1956), conçu par Paul Nelson en étroite collaboration avec Fernand Léger, lequel réalisa une mosaïque pour le péristyle à l'entrée de l'hôpital, en décora les murs extérieurs et choisit les couleurs des chambres et des couloirs. Paul Nelson fut également pressenti pour la construction du musée Fernand Léger à Biot, mais son projet ne fut finalement par retenu. C'est lui, en revanche, qui construisit la maison de Nadia Léger à Gif-sur-Yvette. Le long article de Léger publié dans ce volume ("A propos du corps humain considéré comme un objet") se clôt d'ailleurs sur des questions architecturales : "Il apparaît à certains indices sociaux et artistiques qu'une renaissance de l'art mural est à l'horizon. L'art monumental peut et doit utiliser, en l'amplifiant, cette conception nouvelle. Les jeunes architectes qui vont reconstruire l'Europe détruite devraient regarder de ce côté. Cet art doit se placer dans de grandes architectures. Il est statique par son expression même, il respecte le mur à côté d'une conception dynamique qui, elle, détruit le mur. Il sera la mesure et l'équilibre." Quelques mois seulement après la parution de ce livre Fernand Léger et Paul Nelson, partis tous deux aux Etats-Unis pendant la guerre, revinrent en France où ils se lancèrent ensemble dans le projet de l'hôpital de Saint-Lô, considéré comme le chef-d'oeuvre de Paul Nelson.
