Two volume second edition set with two pages numbered 167 and two numbered 168 as noted; pages 263-270 repeated. Original full calf binding with five black horizontal lines and volume number on spine, heavy rubbing and worn on points with some loss at spine ends. Volume I has 1" chip to leather head of spine, front hinge quite weak and literally hanging on by threads, needs some tightening; has penciled numbers and signature inside front board. Volume II has identical penciled signature and date of 1871, binding secure. Previously owned by "R Watts" who signed title pages. Foxing throughout both volumes and age toned, a complete copy of the edition that was first to identify authors Hamilton, Madison, and Jay. This edition was expanded to include the federal constitution plus the first eleven amendments, as well as additional essays written by Hamilton (under the pseudonym "Pacificus"), and is thus considered the most comprehensive edition. 317pp; 351pp. Additional photographs available on request. ; MCN21662; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .

Hallowell, ME: Glazier & Co, 1826. Leather. 582p. REBOUND. A hardcover book rebacked with a new leather spine and fresh endpapers, retaining the original brown leather boards. Light rub marks on cover and corners a bit shelf-worn. Bottom corner torn off page 277-278. All pages browned and foxed with age. The gutter and bottom corner of the page block are dampstained from the beginning through about page 60. Otherwise, text clean and binding tight. A sturdy, readable copy in very good condition, attractive on a bookshelf. An early printing of the Federalist Papers in which the author of each essay is identified. Prior to 1818, the authors remained anonymous.

Lithographed portrait frontispiece of Hamilton, two other plates with portraits of Madison and Jay, all portraits have tissue overlays. NOTE: This copy has a 1817 date on the title page, and a total of 477 pages while other books listed are dated 1818 with 504 pages. So this is the first single-volume edition minus the Appendix which was added to the 1818 edition. This is an ex-lib from Columbia University, with several stamps and thie bookplate on inside front cover. The book has been rebound in brown buckram with gilt title on spine and call numbers at bottom. The frontispiece plate has a crease through the center and all 3 plates have light foxing and an embossed stamp. Overall Good Plus with about 12 pages having some light pencil marks in margins.
