Cleveland, Ohio - New York, N. Y.: The World Publishing Company, 1942. No date; circa 1942. Powerfully vivid, chiaroscuro illustrations by Harry Clarke throughout. Beige buckram (cloth) boards, blue cloth spine wrap, gilt spine titles on maroon field w/five flourishing gilt bands, slight shelf wear. Classic image of artist and easel embossed in gilt at cover and paint pallet at spine. Pages near fine; no writing. Dust jacket moderate shelf wear, rub; protected in new clear sleeve. Classic wrapper illustration depicts Faust in rapture staring at topless figurine w/long-nailed gypsy devil over shoulder; striking in monochromatic, bluish green hue. Nouveau illustration beginning to end by Harry Clarke inc. endpapers. These were highly influential renderings during the golden age of gift-book illustration in first quarter of twentieth century. Clarke (March 17, 1889-1931) was a famed Irish book illustrator and stained glass artist. Born in Dublin, he was a leading figure in the Irish Arts and Crafts Movement. Translated into English, in the original metres, by Bayard Taylor. The First Part of 'Faust' was first published in its present form in 1808 and the Second Part in 1832. Bayard Taylor's translation w/Parts I and II first appeared in 1932. 252 pages. Insured post.. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. Fine/Very Good.
