In late 1845 he showed that magnetism and light interacted by demonstrating that a strong magnetic field can rotate the plane of polarization of light, a phenomenon now called the "Faraday effect." In the paper that described this experiment Faraday also stated his belief that "The various forms under which the forces of matter are made manifest ... are so directly related and mutually dependent, that they are convertible, as it were, one into another, and possess equivalents of power in their action.
