About This Item
London: John Murray, 1834. Croker (1798-1854), a folklorist, collected ancient Irish poetry and legends; his work remains important today. This is a Very Good (Minus) copy of the First Edition Thus, a reprint of the original publication (in 1825) that he "condensed and revised" to fewer tales and a single volume. Issued as part of Murray's "Family Library" series, with plates and woodcuts, at 5 shillings the book. EXTREMELY SCARCE in any early printings; rare if any institutional holdings. Paper-covered boards with black lettering, mildly bumped. Clean text; 344 pages, including an appended letter of praise from Sir Walter Scott. The rear board contains an advert from the publisher. Very bright and readable, although pages are stiff. The main defect of the volume is that the spine is perished, although everything is holding together nicely. Please note this condition issue; Quercus must offer this as a Binding Copy, in need of repair or restoration. This would well be worth the nominal cost to fully preserve this rare little book. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. First Thus.. Hard Cover. Very Good Minus/No Jacket.
