Charles Lauriat Co.:, 1925. The second edition from 1927 204 pages, illustrated with 8 tipped in plates of the ships (in b&w) mentioned in this book: Three Brothers of NY, Tacoma, Triumphant, Wm. J, Roach of New Bedford. "Prior to 1866 the Packet Ships carried passengers and merchandise from port to port on the Atlantic Ocean. A few years later the Clipper Ship Serivce was started; these sailing ships were specially built and rigged for speed and they followed the deep sea routes between the Atlantic ports, the East Indies, China and California and the seaboard cities of South America. They operated until about the year 1884, when the lower wages of Great Briitain and Germany made competition too keen for them to survive. The author explains "this book relates the stories of several voyages that I made, while working my way up from third mate to first mate at the height of the history of the California ships."
