About This Item

Stockholm, 1889-01-01. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Atlas folio, 51 x 31 cm. Modern 3/4 black leather. Original maroon boards. Hardcover. Good binding and cover. Top page end washed red. Old dampstains to top page end, barely affecting head margins. Clean, unmarked pages. Nordenskiold was an explorer and scientist in his own right. (He completed the first successful navigation of the Northeast Passage on the Vega, 1879-1880.) This, his most substantial monograph on the history of early cartography, was systematic and influential. His personal collection of early maps was given to the University of Helsinki, and has been inscribed on UNESCO's memory of the World Register. This is an oversized or heavy book, that requires additional postage for international delivery outside the US.
