This catalogue is the result of four years of research by the primary author, Guy C. McElroy, and features the works of 80 artists as represented by 116 paintings, sculptures and works on paper. Essays written by Henry Louis Gates, Jr., as well as McElroy, and contributions by Janet Levine, Francis Martin Jr., and Claudia Vess. Extensive selected bibliography. Includes works by many well-known American artists. A lavish publication. Originally published as the catalogue for an exhibition at the Corcoran Gallery of Art from Jan. 13 to Mar. 25, 1990, which then traveled to the Brooklyn Museum.
