About This Item

Garden City NY: Doubleday & Company, Inc.. Near Fine in Very Good dj. (c.1960, 1959). First Edition. Hardcover. [lightly shelfworn, a couple of tiny spots on front cover near spine; jacket (supplied) is a bit edgeworn, with a small chip at the upper flap-fold; a previous mis-folding has been somewhat corrected (with a new mylar cover), but the jacket still shows the effects]. (B&W photographs) INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the front endpaper: "For Joan / Shalom / Leon Uris." (See note at end about the provenance of this copy.) "Every reader of 'Exodus' will welcome this opportunity to accompany Leon Uris on his return to the scenes of his best-selling novel. Tourist guides in the Holy Land have been besieged by questions about places mentioned in 'Exodus,' and Israeli tourist officials are unanimously agreed that the novel is responsible for a large part of the increasing tourist trade in their country. For those who have visited the land of 'Exodus,' or for those who would like to, [this book] is intended as a permanent record of a courageous people and the new nation they are building." This copy bears an embossed stamp beneath the author's inscription, which reads: "Exodus Books / Sherman Oaks, California / Limited Edition," with the number (121B) handwritten. Exodus Books (later Exodus Books & Records) was a bookshop owned and operated by Leon Uris himself, in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles, from 1960 until about 1967. The shop, which later had two locations (the second in Northridge), was billed in its early advertisements as "the Valley's first and only major book store" -- the many others, presumably, being merely minor book stores. One of its attractions, obviously, was its ability to supply personally-autographed copies of Uris's own books; although there's no way of determining how many "limited edition" copies of this title were sold there over the years, one can reasonably infer from the numbering of this copy that there were at least 121 (although I can't account for that "B"). I can state, however, that I've been unable to locate, at least in e-commerce, any other store-branded copy of this particular title -- or any other Uris book, for that matter. ****NOTE that additional postage charges will be assessed for international shipping of this heavy book; if this concerns you, please contact us for a shipping quote before placing your order.**** Signed by Author .
