[Columbus, Ohio]: New Model Printing Co, 1935. Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. Two broadsides and a pamphlet. The broadsides measures 11" x 14" and 6" x 11". One broadside on stiff card stock, the other a thin sheet. Both age-toning on the edges, very good. The pamphlet is a single sheet folded once to make four pages. 16mo. Fine. Examples of fragile and rare posters for the traveling exhibition of Pierce's woodcarvings from the Bible and a pamphlet for his exhibit with a list of works. The larger poster leaves blank space for the place, time, and price of admission for the exhibition and also advertises "Quartet Singing ... Good Music." The smaller poster advertises a "Mammoth Sacred Art Demonstration" held in Columbus, Ohio and viewable by appointment only. Pierce (1892-1984) was born the son of a former slave in Mississippi, became an ordained minister, and worked as an itinerant preacher displaying his carvings in the 1930s. Pierce was also a barber, sculptor, and woodcarver during his long career who lived in Columbus, Ohio. In the exhibition catalog *Elijah Pierce: Woodcarver*. (Columbus, Ohio: Columbus Museum of Art 1992), the larger poster image is employed in the Introduction on page 11 of the catalog. A rare set of posters and ephemera from early in Pierce's career as a woodcarver.

"Pierce's Wood Carving Exhibit: Over 1000 Carvings, Educational, Fascinating, Carved with a Pocket Knife." [2] pages, 5 1/4 x 3 3/4 inches on one folding sheet; Admission ticket to "The Mammoth Sacred Art Display" at 536 Long Street (next door to Pierce's barber shop at 534 Long Street). 2 x 3 1/2 inches, completed in pencil. Overall near fine with minimal wear. Near Fine. An early collection of ephemera from the career of Elijah Pierce. Pierce worked as a barber to pay the bills, and one of the locations listed here, at 536 Long St., was next door to his barbershop. Though he worked in relative obscurity during his life, his work is now held at many major institutions.

The catalogue for Elijah Pierce's 1973 exhibition at the Columbus Gallery of Fine Arts, his first major show, the commentary largely composed from Pierce's own words, edited from taped interviews with Carolyn Jones, 1972-3. Pierce is now widely considered one of the great American outsider artists. Signed by Pierce with his address on the title page: his autograph is genuinely uncommon. The son of freed slaves, Pierce was born on a farm in Mississippi in 1892, he took to barbering to escape farm labour. Settling in Ohio in the 1920s, he eventually set up his own barbershop, and became a Baptist preacher.
