London: Kegan Paul, Trench & Co., 1, Paternoster Square, 1886. Hardcover, blue cloth boards, gilt-stamped spine. Good/No Dust Jacket. Essays on Byron, Shelley, Wordsworth, Keats, Hugo, Tennyson, Browning, Whitman, and others. 356 pages, corners bumped, wear to ends, some signatures unopened. Association copy, INSCRIBED on the half-title in black ink: 'Charles Roden Buxton from Conrad Noel - Spring 1915.' The author Roden Noel, 1834-1894, was an English poet. Conrad Noel, 1869-1942, was the son of the author and an English priest known as the 'Red Vicar' of Thaxted for his Christian Socialism. He has inscribed the book to his first cousin, Charles Roden Buxton. Buxton was the son of Sir Thomas Fowell Buxton and Lady Victoria Buxton, sister of the author. Charles Roden Buxton, 1875-1942, was a British philanthropist and radical Liberal (later Labour) Party politician. He survived an assassination attempt in 1914, and perhaps this volume was a gift from his cousin during his convalescence. Sadly, it appears he was not a fan of his uncle's essays, and many of the pages remain unopened.
