Iris cloth with gilt lettering. Color-illus. dj with white spine lettering. 320 pp. with 9 bw figures, 120 color plates and 138 color illus. in the catalogue. Curated by Tadashi Kobayashi. Presented are 138 exceptional works of art by the g reat masters of the Edo period as well as the paintings of their students, friends, and associates, whose relationships the authors explore and discuss. In addition to artists such as Rinpa, Maruyama-Shijo, and artists of the Kano, Tosa, and Hasegawa schools, the selections include paintings by Ike Taiga, Sengai, and Tawaraya Sotatsu. Kobayashi gives an overview of the collection, and other authors give the major histories of nanga painting, Rinpa painting, and ukiyo-e during the Edo period. Traditional painting practices, nanga and zanga collecting in the US, and other topics are covered as well. For the majority of the works, this is their first time in a publication. The collection itself is one of the most renowned in the US for paintings from the Edo period. (paraphrased from the dj).
