Narrated in the first-person by protagonist Jacob Horner. Horner, 28 year old, in incapacitated from nihilistic paralysis, is unable to choose, or commit to, a course of action. Horner's nameless African-American therapist steers him to teaching at a teachers' college. There, Horner becomes friends with the super-rational Joe Morgan and his wife, Rennie.
